OOTD: Buffy Tee

Buffy.  Oh how I love you!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favorite show of all time forever and ever.  This is also my favorite shirt because 1) Buffy 2) it was a present from my sister 3) it is super comfortable.

I threw the t-shirt on over a white dress with black polka dots and I think the outfit turned out pretty well.  Sometimes it's hard to tell how a dress will look with a shirt or sweater over it.  It really depends on the shape and length of the shirt in combination with where the waistline of the dress falls.  Normally I'd wear this top with jeans but I really like how it looks with the polka dots.  This might be my favorite summer outfit so far this year!

My bracelets are all Chavez for Charity.  The two red ones go towards V-Day, which is a movement to end violence against women and girls.  The white peace sign bracelet benefits the Matthew Shepard Foundation, which was set up in response to anti-gay hate crimes, specifically that which led to the death of Matthew Shepard.  I kind of enjoy that the bracelets match the shirt but also that the charities that the bracelets support are also completely in line with the values expressed in the show.  :)

I straightened my hair for the first time this summer, I think.  I've sort of been on a hair brushing hiatus and have just letting it look big and crazy in the humidity.  It's better for it to have the break at least once a year anyway.  Besides that, a very large section at the bottom is totally dried out and splitting so I don't want to go crazy with it until I get around to getting a hair cut.

Apparently my feet didn't make it into any of these pictures but I wore boring old black foam flip flops.  It was a rainy day and I was going out on a day time date with a girlfriend so I really didn't want to worry about puddles.  If when I wear this outfit again I think I'll wear nicer black sandals with it.

P.S. That basket full of laundry sneaking it's way into all of this photos is totally clean!  I washed a million blankets and towels and left them all to cool down for the day (well, maybe a couple of days).  Isn't folding hot laundry the worst in the summer?!

Casual Wednesday: Pink and Navy OOTD

Summer sweaters are the best.  I may have swiped this one from my mother...

I really like how slouchy this sweater is and how it usually falls off one shoulder.  It kind of put me in a little bit of an 80s vibe so I felt like I needed to have a fluffy side ponytail.  :)  I wore it with navy shorts, navy flats and silver hoop earrings.

Here's a super blurry close up of my flats.  They are the super comfortable American Eagle brand from Payless.  They look a little like suede and have a cute bow on the front.

Tasty Tuesday: Birthday Treats!

I had two pieces of toast with peanut butter and a little bit of jelly.  I kind of mixed the jelly into the PB because there was just a teeny tiny amount left in the jar and I wanted to finish it up.  I also had a cup of black coffee.

Morning Snack:

I had a glass of water and an applesauce pouch.  The apple cinnamon flavor is my favorite but the other flavors that this brand has are also good.

For lunch I had two rice cakes with canned salmon on top.  I mixed the salmon with a mustard and a little bit of mayonnaise.  I also had a couple of dill pickles and peach flavored kefir.

I made cheese ravioli for supper.  The sauce is just a bunch of tomatoes, onion, garlic, olive oil, and frozen peas.  I think I also threw in some basil, oregano, and sage.  I can't remember but it turned out really yummy.  Since cheese ravioli doesn't have enough cheese in it I added some parmesan on top.  :)  Ha ha!

Birthday Dessert!

It's sort of difficult to make and then frost a birthday cake in July so this year Steve got a frozen custard pie for his birthday!  It was vanilla with peanut butter, fudge, and peanut butter cups on it.  I think frozen treats for summer birthdays are the way to go.

Weekend Recap: Birds at the Pond

I normally recap my weekend on Mondays but I ended up being out of the house for the whole day and night so I didn't get a chance to write the post until now.  On Saturday Steve and I went out for coffee and then for a walk around the pond.  When we came home we spent a solid six hours organizing our storage room.  It felt so good to actually have time to be so productive!

I have a bunch of pictures from our walk because it was a really nice day.  It was sunny but it was also windy so it wasn't too hot.  Usually we are just overrun by geese when we go there but there are a lot of other kinds of birds that are always there.  We also saw a really cute bunny!  It was a different and smaller kind than the one we usually see in our yard.  I didn't get a picture of it though because the city is doing some work and there was orange plastic fencing up in between me and the bunny.  I didn't want to loom over the fence and scare it so we just watched it hop around while we sat on a bench.

This was just the shell with no snail inside.  But it was huge!

More ducks!
Still, the ducks.
This tree looks like it is twisting up out of the ground.

Alice Cooks: Jambalaya

Jambalaya is so good!

I have made this so many times and every time I think, "I should make this more."  I have made it super spicy and super mild but this time I just made it regular, which is slightly spicy.  I also included ham this time, which I don't always do.

Green Pepper
Chicken Stock
Diced Tomatoes (undrained)
Brown Rice
Spices (thyme, basil, cayenne pepper,
bay leaf, black pepper)
Andouille Sausage
Ham (chopped up ham steak)
Olive Oil

First, stop wearing the white shirt that you are wearing because if you think you won't get tomato stains on it you're wrong.  (I did change my shirt.  I only got a teensy tiny spot on it first.)

The veggies go into the hot oil.  This smelled soooo good!  I just wanted to eat this.  Actually, it would probably be a really good thing to dump on top of a baked potato.  I'll have to remember that.

Once the veggies are soft, pour in the chicken stock, tomatoes, spices, sausage and rice.  This is when I look at my pan and think, there is still so much left to put in.  Is it going to overflow?  I literally think this every time but I have only ever made jambalaya in this exact pan and it has NEVER been a problem.  Let it boil then turn it down and cover it for a while.  My recipe says 20 minutes but I think the rice needs a little longer, but maybe I turn it down too low?

Stir in the shrimp then cover it back up for a few minutes so it can cook.  My tip for the shrimp is to only use the jumbo shrimp.  I've had jambalaya with the tiny shrimp before and it's really cute.  But the jumbo shrimp curls up pretty tight while it's cooking in all of this hot liquid so it ends up being smaller anyway.  Once the shrimp is pink and rice is cooked put the ham in.

I used 1 pound of shrimp and an appropriate shrimp-sausage-ham ratio and it made enough for two hearty sized meals for two plus extra.  The rice soaked up a lot of the liquid while it sat overnight in the refrigerator so I added more diced tomatoes when I put it back on the stove to heat it up for the second night.  This is also an easy thing to cook on the stove then to put in a crock pot to bring to a party.  It can cook and be reheated and it still tastes good because it's a stew and is supposed to be a little soggy.

In case you missed the update at the bottom of my most recent Tasty Tuesday post, I am going to try adding a second day of food posts.  (What?  I like to eat.)  Here in the Manfrida house there is a lot of cooking happening.  Sometimes it's more involved cooking so on Saturdays I'm planning to do more involved food posts on this blog.

OOTD: Pineapple Cardigan

This sweater is the best.

I bought this lightweight cardigan at Target last weekend.  When it's all buttoned up, it has a v-neck.  I guess I would say that it has 3/4 length sleeves but they are kind of in between that and actual long sleeves.  Steve said they are the sleeve equivalent of capri pants.  :)

I like how the cardigan has a relaxed fit.  Even when it's buttoned up it is still loose and casual.  The base color is cream, not white, so I think it will live to see many a Fall day this year.

I wore this on a day that wasn't very hot so I just wore my super old and kind of ratty jeans, a black ribbed tank top and black sandals.  I also wore a bracelet made out of a bent knitting needle.  It is mint green and went with my nails and the little pineapple tops on the cardigan.

These pictures are super blurry because I haven't figured out a good lighting solution in my bedroom since getting my new curtains and I have been too lazy to take them down to take outfit pictures.  But such is the case for unpaid blogging.  Ha ha!

Nails: Shades of Green

Green is my favorite color.  The only green I've ever met that I didn't like is the weird shade that is what my dining room and living room walls are painted with.  Ah the life of a renter.  Anyway, my toes are still pink from last week and I was trying to decide what to put on my finger nails and I could only think of green.  After I did my nails I realized that I was completely influenced by the discussion of pink and green I had with a friend who is expecting a baby soon.  Apparently my thoughts are just not my own.  Ha ha!

Maybelline Color Show Green With Envy 320

I find that the color show polishes go on very streaky with the first coat.  They definitely need 2-3 coats to look nice.  But the mint is so pretty!

Some of my nails peel a lot and I don't baby my hands so I am not a stranger to broken nails.  As a result, my nails are rarely the same length as one another.  If I am going to paint some of my nails with an accent color I usually pick whichever ones are the longest or straightest.  This time the nicest looking ones happened to be the ring finger on both hands so it's all very symmetrical.

Tasty Tuesday 7.22.14

Oatmeal!  I made it with half water and half almond milk.  I've got flax, walnuts, raisins, blackstrap molasses and a banana in there.  I drank a glass of water while it was cooking and a cup of black coffee after I ate it.

That's a whole nectarine and 5 or 6 strawberries on top of plain Greek yogurt.  The yellow blob on the left is raw honey.  I also had a glass of water.

Steve and I split a cucumber while the rest of the food was cooking.

The salmon has salt, dill, dijon mustard and lemon on it.  The corn was good but the kernels seemed really tiny so I kind of wish we'd had more than one each.  Oh well.  Since they were tiny they didn't get stuck in our teeth too much.  Ha ha!  I washed it all down with another glass of water.

There were 3 cookies in the freezer and Steve didn't want any so I ate 3 cookies.  :)  I also had a cup of tea and another glass of water before bed.

Tasty Tuesday Maintenance Notes:
On food related posts I seem to get the most views when I post about specific meals that I cook.  Not a huge difference from the What I Ate posts, but still, a noticeable one.  I like doing the What I Ate posts so I'm going to keep doing them but I think I'm going to add a second food day per week since people seem to like them.  Tuesdays will usually be a What I Ate with occasional other food related posts mixed in and then Saturdays will be a whole meal post.  (You can find an example here from when I cooked a whole chicken.)  I'm going to keep Mondays for Weekend Recaps and Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for miscellaneous beauty, style and home posts.

Weekend Recap: Driving and Shopping

I am car-sitting for a week while the car owner is on vacation.  It's been kind of fun because I haven't actually driven a car in almost a year.  I drove to and from the airport the other day but I did a ton of driving this weekend.  On Saturday, Steve and I went to visit my sister. We made brunch and then had popsicles for dessert.  Mine was grape.

This is my artsy/scrapbookish idea of how to photograph a popsicle. #Blurry

I had to stop for gas to get back home on Saturday but there is no way that I'm going to use a full tank of gas before I give this car back.  I mean, we don't have a car because we wouldn't use it if we did.  There isn't a point to driving around the city pretty much ever.  Anyway, because I bought the gas I decided that I should use some more of it.  So we drove an hour to go to lunch with friends.

And then the shopping.

We went to basically every store that the suburbs has to offer.  We actually got a bunch of stuff that we have been planning to get for a long time but have just been waiting for a good opportunity (car).

My dining room is the worst room.  It has weird walls and doorways, I don't like the color of the walls, it echoes, and it's part-dining-room-part-hallway.  We rearranged some of the furniture yesterday and then I got this really pretty tablecloth and some napkins.  We almost got a rug for the giant empty space that is open so that you can walk through this room to get to the living room but we decided to wait a little longer on that.  For now, the room is starting to feel a lot nicer.

I got this wicked awesome pineapple cardigan!!  This, along with the two t-shirts, is from Target.  The pink one is a v-neck and the black one is a scoop neck.  Steve was trying on shorts so I was wandering around looking at clothes waiting for him and it occurred to me that I do not have a plain black short sleeved t-shirt and haven't for a few years for some reason.  Then I thought, well, I'll just get this cute pink one because it's pretty.  The pineapple shirt pretty much just bought itself for me with my money because...I mean you can see it, right?! Ha ha ha!  :)

Girly Nails

Urban Outfitters Prairie Rose
OPI (it's a mystery because the bottle doesn't say the color name)

For my fingers I went with a color that I think might be Radiant Orchid, which is the Pantone Color of 2014.  Yes I know that.  I do care about these things.  2013 was Emerald and it was the greatest year of my life.

I probably have mentioned it before (and I probably will again) that I have lots of hot pink nail polish.  They are all different but they are all hot pink.  I like this one but I really hate the mini bottle.  The handle is small and annoying to hold but the part that's the worst is the teeny tiny brush.  It takes a ton of brush strokes to cover and entire nail.  But it's a good pink.  :)  I don't know what the name of the color is though because I think it came in a summer pack a few years ago and I might have split it with a friend or a sister.  The box was probably the only place that said the name.  It's too bad because OPI usually has really great names for their colors.

OOTD: Black and White and Things I Love

I know it's summer but I really just like black.  Ha ha!  I'm also a big fan of wearing neutrals with only one color.  Today I wore black and white but tried a little bit to be "colorful" with my accessories.  I mean, I didn't try hard!

I'll start with my sandals because they are my new favorite thing that I own.  I got them at Nordstrom Rack about a month ago, I think.  These sandals were the prize I got for looking for casual and strappy black sandals for two years.  The brand is MIA and they are super comfortable.

I also really like pants.  Maybe I'm getting sick of summer because the other day I was looking at shoes on Pintrest and I realized I kept looking at boots and autumn outfits.  I should probably figure out how to get over that since I've got at least another month and a half of heat over here.

The white tee makes this look a little more summery and I actually am not wearing a tank top under it.  It's mostly opaque.  I can kind of see the top of my pants through the shirt but it's doesn't look too weird in real life.  This tee is from Old Navy.  I think it's always a pain to find white shirts that are thick enough to deal with this issue.

For my, not very popping, pop of color I've got my favorite handbag.  It's by Fossil and the olive green leather is so soft.  It was soft to begin with but I've had this bag for years and it's been through a lot.  Once a bottle of water opened up inside of it and it filled up like a bucket so there is a really faint line around the whole bag.  There was also this time that a bunch of hot pink paint spilled on it but I got all of that off.

Jewelry can be kind of hard to wear in the summer because everything just feels gross and sticky.  I wore a black, white and yellow cuff bracelet because otherwise my outfit was really boring.  Plus, I really like this bracelet but the yellow doesn't seem to go with very many things in my closet so I don't wear it that often.

Maybelline the Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara
Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm  -  apple a day 300

To go with my totally unbrushed hair I only put on mascara and lip gloss.  Maybelline's Colossal mascara is really nice.  I might like it better than their Falsies mascara, but I'm not sure yet.  I've only been using it for a short time but I think it is less clumpy than the Falsies formula.  This Almay lip gloss smells SO good.  It's very slightly on the orange side of red.  Like my bracelet, I don't seem to find outfits to wear this with but I really like it.
